There is an old saying, “Appearances can be deceiving.” The above two (2) NOS - New Old Stock - containers certainly prove this! The early, 1st issue container on the left appears to be exactly like the 2nd issue container on the right. Actually, the two piece clear ABS plastic containers are exactly alike. The contents are what makes these items different. You see, the box on the right has five (5) extra parts that not only date this but four (4) of which also serve to “SOUP” or “HOP” up the 2nd generation Atlas chassis.

CORRECT PROCEDURE FOR REMOVING AND REASSEMBLING SPUR AND SPLINE GEARS
  1. Remove both screws that attach the body to the chassis. Remove body from chassis.
  2. Pry one (1) or both terminal clips away from motor. Remove motor from chassis.
  3. Hold armature firmly and pry stock gear off commutator. Extreme care must be used when prying the gear from the armature shaft. If not held properly, the commutator will move on the shaft which will result in damage to the armature.
  4. Remove gear of choice from sprue.
  5. Lay gear face down on a flat metal surface. While holding the motor vertically, guide the end of the shaft into the hole of the gear. It is mandated to hold the motor vertically when attaching it to the gear in order for the gear to run true during normal operation. Only use enough downward force to get the gear to attach to the armature shaft.
  6. After mounting the gear, check the clearance with a stiff sheet of paper or a shim of 0.004 or 0.005 - four or five thousandths - of an inch.
  7. Remove the matching spline gear from the sprue and carefully trim the excess molding.
  8. Slip the end of the spline gear in first. Slightly spread the chassis in order to all the other end to fall into place. Gently bend terminal clips inward in order to make good contact when the motor is replaced.
  9. Carefully replace the motor into the chassis. Make certain that the gear teeth mesh as they come into contact. Lubricate with a drop of Atlas Formula XX Slot Car Racing Lubricant Oil or Vaseline® at end of each shaft and each gear face.
